Endometriosis Treatment in the New York City Tri-State Area

Endometriosis is a condition which can greatly affect your quality of life due to pain and fatigue, but endometriosis can be treated.

Endometriosis can affect your productivity at school and work; as well as relationships with your partner, family, and friends. 1 in 10 women suffer from this disease.

Endometriosis is defined by tissue that is similar to the lining of the uterus travels and attaches onto other organs creating adhesions. It commonly can travel and adhere to your ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterosacral ligaments, bladder, bowels, and gallbladder.

It is also possible that it can even travel to your diaphragm and lungs. These adhesions can become inflamed and painful. It is very hard to diagnose and can take 6-12 years to get a proper diagnosis. The gold standard to diagnose endometriosis is through histologic tissue testing that is biopsied following laparoscopic excision surgery.

Common Symptoms of Endometriosis:

  • Pelvic pain throughout different parts of your menstrual cycle

  • Painful periods

  • Pelvic pain and cramping

  • Low back pain

  • Fatigue

  • Constipation or other gastrointestinal issues

  • Possible infertility (25%-35% of cases)

Endometriosis Treatment

Endometriosis treatment involves a multidisciplinary approach. Endometriosis has no cure but the symptoms can be managed. Patients need to find a team of practitioners who will communicate with each other.

Members of the endometriosis treatment team include a gynecologist/physiatrist specializing in pelvic pain, a pelvic floor physical therapist, a gastroenterologist, nutritionist, and possibly a surgeon who has a lot of experience.

Ideally, you want to reduce inflammation and stress on the body. Eating well will reduce inflammation and decrease any digestive issues. Acupuncture is very helpful in reducing pain by calming down the nervous system. In addition, relaxation techniques and meditation will help reduce your stress.
