Postpartum Care in the NYC Tri-state Area

Pelvic floor physical therapy can be crucial to help improve the symptoms associated with the effects of pregnancy on the body as well as some trauma to the tissue you may endure during delivery.

Just like you had any trauma to any muscle in the body, the pelvic floor muscles have been through stress from carrying the baby for around 40 weeks; as well as the trauma to the tissues stretching and/or tearing if you had a vaginal delivery.

In New York State, you can see a pelvic floor physical therapist following your 6 week appointment with your Obstetrician or midwife, in which they will give you a physical therapy script.

Symptoms you may be experiencing:

  • Incontinence

  • Heaviness in your pelvic floor with activity

  • Urinary frequency and urgency

  • Pain with sex

  • Diastasis Recti

  • Generalized weakness and fatigue

  • Bowel issues

Possible causes of the symptoms:

  • Trauma to tissues of the pelvic floor, back, and hips during labor and delivery

  • Pressure to the pelvic floor throughout pregnancy

  • Instability to the pelvis and throughout the body

  • Changes in postural alignment

  • C-section scarring

  • Hormonal imbalances between pregnancy and postpartum

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy can help promote healing of the pelvic floor through manual therapy and stability exercises.

Manual therapy involves soft tissue techniques in order to promote healing of the tissues of the pelvic floor. Your body also undergoes mechanical changes that changes your postural alignment during pregnancy.

In addition, relaxin is a hormone released through the body to loosen our joints and ligaments to allow the baby to be able to grow. However, with more mobility comes more instability. Instability to joints can create pain in different parts of the body.

After you deliver your baby, you will also have different demands on your body such as frequent bending, lifting and breastfeeding to meet the needs of a newborn.

Physical Therapists can give you exercises to help regain stability and improve functional tasks to prevent pain and further injury.

We offer postpartum assessment at our two locations in the New York City Tri-state Area, and we also have virtual appointments available.

Postpartum Assessement

No matter how you delivered your baby, your body went through significant changes over the past year.

Your postural alignment changes in order to distribute your weight for your growing baby.

Even though it’s so important to do whatever you can during your pregnancy, the effects of relaxin can still affect your daily activities and can still be present with breastfeeding.

Here’s what we check for during a postpartum assessment:

  1. Hip Stability

  2. Pelvic floor Assessment for weakness and pain

  3. Postural Evaluation

  4. Overall Strength

  5. Diastasis Recti Assessment

During our postpartum assessment visit, we will provide you with:

  • An overview of healthy mechanics for lifting your baby

  • An exercise prescription to get back to work and exercise

Every woman deserves the opportunity and the education to restore her body after pregnancy.
