Pilates Rehabilitation in the NYC Tri-State Area

Pilates rehabilitation involves a variety of different movements to help either lengthen or strengthen your muscles and fascia. Pilates rehabilitation can be performed on a mat or on various specific pilates equipment such as a reformer.

The basis of Pilates is to be able to create control through your core to provide stabilization and improve strength especially with functional activities throughout the day. Hence, it is invaluable as an adjunct to physical therapy to heal from an injury, surgery, or specific de-conditioning due to a disease process.

Pilates rehab can help to improve strength without high-impact activity. No matter what type of equipment you have access to, you can isolate certain muscle groups and focus on one side of the body at a time. For example, if you injured your shoulder, you will be able to feel and assess the inequality of either strength or motion with the use of Pilates rehabilitation.

Additionally, we can greatly tailor the session specific to our patients needs and progress them accordingly. It is extremely effective to be able to start with simple and easy movements with proper form and adjust the resistance as the patient gains control of their movements.

Pilates rehabilitation can also help to lengthen and provide space into your joints with specific movement patterns and stretches. These “opening” movements can help reduce the tension in the fascia. The fascia encases both your muscles and nerves.

With moving your body into certain positions specific to the practice of pilates, you can help to improve the mobility of the fascia. This may also allow the body to relax for muscles that have been overworking or compensating for other motions.

Pilates is great for rehabilitation of any injury. You can strengthen in many different positions or improve single leg strength and control on a reformer without having to weight-bear. It can be used to improve motion if you are suffering from a frozen shoulder or just had breast cancer reconstruction surgery.

Pilates is extremely effective for rehabilitation following pelvic floor dysfunction. Pelvic floor dysfunction may require either relaxation of the pelvic floor or strengthening of the pelvic floor without impact. All in all, pilates rehab is a great adjunct for any patient coming in for physical therapy.
