Virtual Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy [Telehealth]

Telehealth for Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

In the wake of COVID-19, the physical therapy industry has made a pivot to offering telehealth visits for pelvic floor physical therapy patients. Telehealth is a great way for us to connect with patients and help them on their path to seeking and continuing care.

Here are some benefits of an online appointments for pelvic floor physical therapy:

1.) You can go over your exercises

During an online pelvic floor physical therapy appointment, you can demonstrate how well you’ve been performing your home exercise program and have your physical therapist give you advice. You can also show your physical therapist what you’ve been doing for regular exercise at home and receive modifications for it.

2.) You can make suggestions to help improve your home environment

During your virtual pelvic floor physical therapy visit, you will also find more functionality to be able to continue with a home exercise program. If you’re working from home, your physical therapist can help improve your ergonomic set up to prevent poor alignment and possible future injury.

3.) You have a safe space to ask questions

When being treated for your pelvic floor via telehealth visits, some concerns may arise such as discomfort with sexual intercourse or bowel issues.  A pelvic floor physical therapist can give you recommendations on positions or daily habits that can make a world of difference.  Now that you’ve had some space and time to think, you may have thought of some more questions to ask as well. Your physical therapist has a ton of resources for you in regards to helping you physically, but can also make you referrals to other doctors who may help you with specific needs.

4.) You can figure out how to create your “acute pain tool kit”

Because of the current times, you may not have access to your doctor to get injections or have difficulty picking up your medication. If you are suffering from chronic pain and experiencing a flare-up, take the time to figure out how to create your own personalized “tool kit”. This includes certain exercises and positions that will help alleviate pain. It’s important to work with a virtual pelvic floor physical therapist now to help you build your “acute pain tool kit”.

5.) You can be guided on how to do your own manual therapy

If you are unable to come into the office, an online pelvic floor physical therapist can guide you verbally during a telehealth visit using a model how to use dilators or a pelvic wand. This allows you to increase blood flow to your tissue and allow you to continue with your progress.
